How solar energy works

Q. How does a Solar system generate electricity?
A. When sunlight shines onto your Solar modules, our advanced photovoltaic (PV) technology converts the light into direct current (DC) electricity. Your system’s inverter then converts the DC electricity into 240V alternating current (AC) electricity for normal use in your home.

Q. What happens at night?
A. Since solar photovoltaic (PV) technology requires sunlight to produce electricity, no solar system will produce electricity during the dark hours of the night. If your solar system is grid-connected, your local utility will continue to supply your electricity at night. If you have a standalone system, your batteries or back-up generator will provide you with electricity during the night.

Q. How safe is a Solar system?
A. Solar electricity systems are very safe. They have no moving parts and require very little maintenance. Solar components carry all appropriate/recommended electrical certifications. As with any electrical appliance, you should always use proper care when handling solar system components.

Performance and quality

Q. What happens on cloudy days?
A. Since solar photovoltaic (PV) technology requires sunlight to produce electricity, the bulk of your electricity production will take place in sunny conditions. Output is directly proportionate to the amount of sunlight available at any given moment, so systems can generate 50 - 70% of their typical output under bright overcast conditions but production will continue to diminish as less light reaches the surface of the solar modules.

Q. Do Solar systems require any maintenance?
A. As there are no moving parts in a Solar system, it will require very little maintenance. If it has not rained for a number of months, it is worth giving the modules a quick wash-down with soapy water to remove any build-up of dust and maximize system generation.

Q. Do Solar systems come with a warranty?
A. Solar panels come with a 20-year warranty. The inverters Solar supplies typically come with up to 10 years’ warranty, depending on the model. Regulators and batteries typically come with between one and five years’ warranty. Refer to individual warranties for full terms and conditions.
